On Thursday, March 21, 2013, the Board of Directors of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, NLEOMF, decided to delay a decision to include Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Officer Jennifer Sebena’s name on their roll of honour until 2014.

Please take the time to research the facts surrounding Officer Jennifer Sebena's death and make your voices heard regarding the decision not to include her name on the Memorial in 2013.
What a fitting promotion during the month of March - Women's History Month - Deborah Friedl has been chosen to be the interim Lowell police chief!

Congratulations to Debbie!

Our own IAWP Executive Director, Deborah Friedl, has been chosen to be the interim Lowell police chief. She will be the first woman to lead department.
Deborah Friedl as the department's interim superintendent to replace Kenneth Lavallee, who works his last day March 29. Friedl, who joined the Lowell Police Department in 1985, becomes the first woman to lead the department. It was well-known in the department and in political circles that Lynch zeroed in on Friedl early in the process, and not long after Lavallee announced earlier this month he would not complete his three-year contract, which expires at the end of 2013. Lynch interviewed more than a half-dozen candidates for the interim position. Friedl will be in the post for the next four to six months,
But newer evidence now suggests that it was the Chicago Police Department who employed the first female officer in the late 1890's.
In those years a women worked were limited to youth, administrative, or traffic assignments ("meter maids"). It was not until the mid-late 1970's that women were employed in the patrol function and allowed to perform the job that was once restricted to males.

The IACP Center for Police Leadership and Training, with funding from Motorola Solutions Foundation, proudly introduces a new leadership certification program, the Women's Leadership Institute (WLI). The WLI program is a five and a half day, 46-hour course, focused on the unique challenges facing women leaders in law enforcement. To develop current and future leaders, the curriculum focuses on enhancing the business, leadership, and personal effectiveness skills of female leaders. The course is open to female and male, sworn and non-sworn personnel serving in supervisory positions, and to senior patrol officers aspiring to become supervisors.

This interactive program uses senior women instructors and mentors from United States and Canadian law enforcement agencies and operates in an intensive experiential learning environment. Theories included in the program are gleaned from IACP's research on leading people, groups, and change. Other topics covered include: effective communication and conflict management; career mapping; fair, impartial, and ethical policing; transformational leadership; and stress management. Evening sessions include one-on-one time with instructors and mentors to assist participants with designing a strategic plan for their career.

Upcoming classes:

Boston, MA
Hosted by the Boston Police Department
April 22 - 26, 2013

Seattle, WA
Hosted by the Port of Seattle Police Department
July 15 - 19, 2013

Lodging and some meals for the program are negotiated by IACP for the participants at a reduced rate at the Millennium Bostonian Hotel. Rates are also available for commuter students. Rates for the Seattle class are currently being negotiated with a hotel near the training sit.
