Pray for Our Brothers and Sisters of Lakewood, Washington

It is with great sorrow that we once again have four of our colleagues taken from us.  Murdered while they went about their everyday duty of protecting their community.  Four young, vibrant and dedicated officers have been taken from us early on this Sunday morning by a senseless act of violence.

Bahamian Police Women Association Conference

Grand Bahama police woman will host a two-day conference, November 22 -23, 2009. Delegates are expected from throughout the Caribbean, including Curacao Bermuda, Guyana and Grenada. Recent Promotions

If you have not already heard, your former Region I Coordinator, Debbie Friedl, has been named IAWP Executive Director. I don't need to tell you about all the time and effort Debbie has put into IAWP over these past years. She is an intelligent, talented and gracious woman who has worked her way up the ladder to become Deputy Chief of the Lowell Police Department. She will use those attributes to help lead IAWP towards the future and will respresent IAWP well.Congratualtions Debbie!

I am pleased to pass on the news of Linda McCaul's recent promotion from Captain to Deputy Chief of the Harvard University Police Department. Linda has worked throughout her career to assist the women she works with to excel and move ahead. In the past six years she has worked with the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement in the beginning stages of the formation of the organization and has hosted their annual conference at Harvard University. As she has been promoted over the years, she has not forgotten to turn around and put out a hand to help those climbing up behind her. Congratulations Linda!

2009 IAWP Conference

I recently attended the IAWP's 2009 Conference in Seattle, Washington. What a great conference and such a beautiful city. From the first day with the Parade of Nations to the last day with the Final Banquet, there was pride, friendships formed, a wide range of training offered and plenty of opportunities to network and socialize.

The key note speakers were -

• Colonel Katherine Miller, Deputy Provost Marshal General/Commander U.S. Army
• Ann Rule, Crime writer and former Seattle police officer.

Some of the training offered was - 

• Case Study: Green River Serial Killer
• Women's Vital Role in Successful Undercover Operations
• The Neighborhood Corrections Initiative
• United Nations: Police Women's Participation
• The Troubled History and Modern Issues and Conflicts of Sudan
• Career and Tactical Survival for Women
• Winning Courtroom Confrontations

 The Awards Banquet honored several women and was extremely moving when the Medal of Valor was given out to three women, two posthumously whose families received the award on their behalf. Many attended the General Meeting and voiced their opinion on how to make IAWP better and what direction the association should be headed in over the next several years. And of course, there was time to take in some sightseeing of the beautiful city, which included Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and the Space Needle.

  The Seattle Conference Committee deserves the utmost praise for all their hard work on providing such a great conference and for being such gracious hosts.

 I look forward to next year's conference that is being hosted by Minneapolis PD. If their hospitality night is any indication of the fun to be had next year, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

My name is June Murphy and I am your new Region I Coordinator. I am taking over the position that Debbie Friedl has held for many years.  I am pleased to announce that Debbie has been appointed to the position of IAWP's Executive Director where she will continue to do a great job representing the IAWP and will help lead the association towards the future.

I look forward to the next few years as your Region I Coordinator as we continue to grow and strengthen the IAWP.  I plan to continue the work of the women before me - keeping the IAWP the great organization it has been over the years - by encouraging all of us to learn from each other, to keep moving forward in our careers and to enjoy the friendships that we make along the way.

I would also like to introduce you to the new Region I Blog.  This blog will be used to keep you informed of what the IAWP is up to and will be used to provide you with information on the events and happenings in Region I, including upcoming trainings, conferences, social and charity events as well as promotions, commendations and awards for excellent work in policing by our members.
