Emerald Society of the BPD Annual 5k Walk/Run to Benefit Children with Cancer

On Sunday, September 19, 2010 @ 11:00 a.m, the Emerald Society of the BPD will hold its second annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit children with cancer. The course of the race starts in front of the Emerald Society and travels through the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, returning to Roslindale Village. Throughout the years, the Emerald Society has contributed to many worthwhile charities, both here and abroad. Please consider joining us in recognizing and supporting Cops for Kids with Cancer. Any contributions or donations that you are able to provide are appreciated to further our goal of making this event a success.

IAWP Annual Training ConferenceSeptember 26 - 30, 2010

Just about six weeks away is the start of the IAWP Annual Training Conference in Minneapolis, MN.  Details for the conference training sessions and hotel accommadations can be found on the IAWP website at http://www.iawp.org/.


Opening ceremonies start with the parade of women officers in their uniforms from all over the world including the USA, Canada, Africa, Ireland, England, China, Taiwan, Australia and many other countries.  It is an impressive sight.  We will have a Region 1 photo taken right after the ceremonies are completed.  So come and be part of a great conference where you will meet women from around the world, learn many new things and form lasting friendships.

Chief Lisa BarbinSelected for the National Campus Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women

Wellesley College's chief of police, Lisa Barbin , was recently selected as one of 24 law enforcement executives nationwide to participate in the four-day National Campus Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women.

Hosted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Austin, Tex., the institute explores innovative approaches for investigating crime, assessing agency performance, and sharing challenges and solutions with law enforcement colleagues.

National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives 15th Annual Conference A Great Time in New Jersey!

The National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives 15th Annual Conference was held on August 4 - 8, 2010, hosted by the Bergen County Sheriff Department of New Jersey.  There many opportunities for networking, training and a gathering of a terrific group of women in law enforcment.

Opening Day ceremonies included participants in their dress uniform.  At this ceremony the Motorola Women Law Enforcement Executive of the Year was awarded to Chief Ellen Hanson of Lenexa, Kansas.  Chief Hanson is respected and admired for the professional, dedicated and caring way she leads her department.   Chief Hanson is a founding member of NAWLEE and has been a role model for women all over the country.  In particular, she has been a role model for the women in her department and never fails to bring several of her officers with her to the NAWLEE conference.  Her mentoring results show with Lt. Dawn Layman of Lenexa PD, the current 2nd VP, and sworn in at the conference as the new 1st VP of NAWLEE for the upcoming year. 

The Glass Ceiling Awards were given out to several women who have achieved rank or risen to the next level in rank during the past year.  Keynote speaker - Kathleen Puckett, formerly a Special  Agent with the FBI, spoke about "Your Brain on Law Enforcement" and how the female and male brain work differently and what that brings to law enforcement.

Training segments included: 

• Mentoring Workshop - How to set up a mentoring program in your department - Lt. Dawn Layman
• Stress Management Workshop
• Online Predators and Child Porn
• Innovations in Law Enforcement
• Post Traumatic Stress Impact on Law Enforcement - Bob Delaney, author of "Convert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob" and a former New Jersey State Trooper
• Proactive Strategies for Recruiting, Hiring and Retaining Women Officers - Sheriff Leo McGuire, Chief Patty Garrett Patterson and Capt. (Ret.) Roe Manghisi

On the last day of training a presentation was given called "Women of Ground Zero: Acts of Courage and Compassion" by the authors Mary Carouba and Susan Hagen.  They were accompanied by two women, P.O. Carol Paukner (retired) and Sgt. Susan Keane of the Port Authority Police of New York & New Jersey.  Both of these women were working on Sept. 11, 2001 and experienced the devastation as they did all they could to save countless people.  There was not a dry eye in the room.  A visit to Ground Zero and the Tribute Museum in New York was made on the last day of the conference.  

The conference hosts entertained the attendees with a night at Meadowlands/Pegasus for dinner and horse racing.  The final dinner was aboard the Princess Cruise where we cruised the Hudson and saw the New York skyline and the Statute of Liberty.

With the swearing in of the new board, past president Chief Patty Garrett Patterson, has turned her eyes on another office as she seeks to be elected as vice president-at-large for the International Chiefs of Police this October at the IACP Annual Conference.  

Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement - Another Successful Conference!

The Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement recently held their 7th annual training conference on July 23rd at the Holiday Inn in Falmouth, MA.  It was followed by their 2nd Great Cape Escape Golf Tournament at Falmouth Country Club on July 24th.

This year's conference was co-sponsored by Sheriff James Cummings and Barnstable County Sheriff Department.  Captain Jeanne Bonavita of the Barnstable County Sheriff Department was the hostess for the conference along with Sgt. Mary McCauley of the Massachusetts State Police.  The day started off with the Honor Guards of the Barnstable and Plymouth County Sheriff Departments.  The keynote speaker was Senate President Therese Murray who talked about the progress women have made in law enforcement and the glass ceilings they have broken.  She went on to encourage all participants of the conference to not stop at breaking the glass ceiling but to continue on until the glass ceiling is nothing but a memory. 

Training sessions were held on the following topics - 

• Gang Members: Identifying/Investigation/Intelligence Sharing
• Methamphetamine and Trendy Drugs
• Intro to Narcotic Detection Canines: Understanding Scent Work/Legalities/Liabilities
• Search Warrants in 2010- A Primer

During lunch State Treasurer Tim Cahill spoke about the importance of the fields of education and public safety.  He stressed that in moving into the future we must not be short sighted, but plan for the long term.

Through out the day participants had the opportunity to bid on silent auction items that included an iPad, a foursome at Falmouth Country Club, a golf bag and a Street Survival Seminar.  There were also numerous raffle prizes, all awarded at the close of the conference.

The next morning many of the conference participants joined up with other golfers at the Falmouth Country Club.  There were two grand prizes being offered for a hole-in-one - a Mercedes Benz C Class and a fully loaded Ford Edge.  Though there were no winners this year, everyone had a fun time.  Golfing was followed by a cookout on the grounds of the country club.

The Town of Natick seeks a highly motivated, accomplished and visionary law enforcement leader to sere as the next Chief of Police. 

Natick is a suburban residential community with a population of approximately 32,000 located in Middlesex County approxamatley 18 miles southwest of Boston. The Town covers roughly 16 square miles and hosts the largestretail mall in New England, the Natick Collection located on Route 9.

The Police Chief is a non-civil service position serving as chief administrative officer of the department in all matters of policy, operations, and discipline; appointed by the Board of Selectmen,the Chief reports to the Town Administrator for general administrative and policy guidance. The Chief is responsible for the planning, directing, coordinating, controlling and staffing of all activities for the department.
