Sunday 23 August	0900 – Opening Ceremony in St David’s Hall, followed by Parade of Nations through the City Centre and IAWP Awards Luncheon
Monday 24 & Tuesday 25 August	Full day of training in 4 sessions of 7 workshops/seminars running at the same time
Wednesday 26 August	Two Morning only sessions for training, with IAWP AGM and Regional meetings p.m
Thursday 27 August	Two Morning only sessions for training, with formal close at Final Banquet in the evening

Spirit of MAWLE Award Ceremony

Region 9 & 10 Presents - Training Conference - Las VegasMarch 22 - 23, 2014

 

          The International Association of Women Police (IAWP) is holding a joint Regional Training Conference presented by Regions 9 and 10 and Tamia Dow,Chaplain IAWP. The training is open to all persons in the criminal justice and law enforcement professions. The classes will be held Monday and Tuesday, March 24 and 25, 2014, at the Gold Coast Casino in Las Vegas Nevada USA. A special reduced room rate is being offered for IAWP training attendees. The IAWP Board will be meeting Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23, 2014; several Board Members will be participating in the training classes which follow. We welcome you to join us for two-days of training and networking with the IAWP.

          The theme of the training is "Surviving and Thriving in Law Enforcement." Current topics include: Human Trafficking, Crime Scene Investigation, Career/Leadership, and Officer Safety. We are looking into a hands-on defensive tactics and health and fitness sessions. This will be an informative and fun conference. It will also be a great way to network with others through the IAWP Regional Training. Conference dress attire will be business attire, uniforms are not required.

The Award Ceremony will start off with a social/networking hour from 4:00PM to 5:00 PM with the award presentation starting at 5:00PM.  The guest speaker this year is Interim Superintendent Deborah Friedl of the Lowell Police Department.  Many of you know Debbie through IAWP as our Executive Director.

Step Up to Law Enforcement Boot Camp - Burlington, Vermont

 

June 22-23 and June 29-30

Vermont Works for Women will be conducting a 32-hour two weekend program that is designed for women interested in learning about opportunities in the law enforcement field or corrections.  Participants will attend classes in the Burlington area where they will learn from over a dozen professionals in various stages of their careers, get an inside scoop on the multi-stage application process for these challenging careers, participate in a mock physical fitness test which exactly mirrors the policing entrance exam, begin preparation and practice for the written aptitude test, tour a corrections facility...and much more!  The cost of the program is $300.  Limited scholarships available.

Your voices were heard!

The Board of Directors of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund made their final decision on whether to add Officer Jennifer Sebena's name to their roll of honour in May 2013.

They heard the voices from Wisconsin and the law enforcement community throughout the country and have unanimously voted to place her name on the 2013 roll of honour.

On Thursday, March 21, 2013, the Board of Directors of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, NLEOMF, decided to delay a decision to include Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Officer Jennifer Sebena’s name on their roll of honour until 2014.

Officer Sebena was killed while on duty on December 24, 2012. The Board of Directors of NLEOMF have deferred the decision to include her on their roll of honour while they “continue to examine and investigate” the circumstances of her death.

Please take the time to research the facts surrounding Officer Jennifer Sebena's death and make your voices heard regarding the decision not to include her name on the Memorial in 2013.

What a fitting promotion during the month of March - Women's History Month - Deborah Friedl has been chosen to be the interim Lowell police chief!

Our own IAWP Executive Director, Deborah Friedl, has been chosen to be the interim Lowell police chief. She will be the first woman to lead department.

It wasn't a surprise, but it was historic Thursday when City Manager Bernie Lynch selected Deputy Supt. Deborah Friedl as the department's interim superintendent to replace Kenneth Lavallee, who works his last day March 29. Friedl, who joined the Lowell Police Department in 1985, becomes the first woman to lead the department. It was well-known in the department and in political circles that Lynch zeroed in on Friedl early in the process, and not long after Lavallee announced earlier this month he would not complete his three-year contract, which expires at the end of 2013. Lynch interviewed more than a half-dozen candidates for the interim position. Friedl will be in the post for the next four to six months,

March - Women's History Month

The first woman to be a police officer in the United States was orginally believed to date back to Los Angleles, California Police Department in 1908.  But newer evidence now suggests that it was the Chicago Police Department who employed the first female officer in the late 1890's.
In those years a women worked were limited to youth, administrative, or traffic assignments ("meter maids").  It was not until the mid-late 1970's that women were employed in the patrol function and allowed to perform the job that was once restricted to males.

Sgt. Doreen Champagne - First Female Superior Office in Haverhill, MA

Congratulations Sergeant Doreen Champagne!

Doreen Champagne is the first female superior officer in the city of Havehill.  She joined the Haverhill Police Department in 2004. She is one of six female officers in the department, but is the first woman to hold a rank above private in city history.  Champagne is also the only officer in the department with a law degree.

Best wishes for her and her future career in law enforcement!
