Job Opening - Chief of Police

 SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Administration, the Chief of Police manages all administrative, personnel, and financial responsibilities for a comprehensive 24 hour/365 days-a-year department, with a budget responsibility of 13 million annually, managing a staff of 87 officers plus additional support staff.  The position oversees patrol operations, investigations, officer recruitment and training, a communication center, community policing, emergency response, crime prevention strategies, college crime statistic reporting, event management, dignitary protection, facilities security, traffic control and enforcement, and criminal incident/emergency scene management.

The Chief works to develop and implement programs and services related to the public safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, the protection of property, and the prevention of crime.  The position requires the Chief to maintain collaborative working relationships with university officers, deans and other senior administrators, security, community groups, municipal police departments, and other government agencies.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and ten years of police experience, including: knowledge of law enforcement best practices; currency in technology and communications; leadership and interpersonal skills; and policing in urban environments. Seven years in management and understanding of higher education environments are preferred; candidates must meet P.O.S.T. requirements within a year of hire.
