RAD Systems - Basic Physical Defense Instructor Course

Rape Aggression Defense System is offering an instructor's course for  basic physical defense at Anna Maria College, Paxton, MA on January 11 - 13, 2010. 

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.

Congratulations to Chief Colleen Smullen of West Haven Police Department

Congratulations to Chief Colleen Smullen for her appointment to Chief of the West Haven Police Department, CT.  She was sworn in on Monday and becomes the first female chief in the department. She started her career in 1985 and worked hard, making many firsts along the way including being the first female in the rank of sergeant, lieutenant, captain and deputy chief.

“Across the board, if you work hard and if you educate yourself, you can achieve anything,” she said.

Another First for Massachusetts! Marian McGovern Named Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police

Marian McGovern has been selected by Governor Deval as the Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police. She will be the first female to hold this top position for the department. When McGovern joined the department in 1979 there were only three female troopers.  On December 16, 2009 she will take over as the commander of the force of nearly 2,300.

Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Install Their First Female President - Mary Lyons

The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police will install Chief Mary Lyons of Mattapoisett as their new president and the first female president of the organization this week.

Pennsylvania Once Again is Faced with the Loss of One of Their Own

Officer Michael Crawshaw of the Penn Hills Police Department in Pennsylvania was ambushed and fatally shot as he sat in his patrol car waiting for backup.  He was the first officer to respond to a 911 call on  Sunday night.  He was advised to wait for backup due to a history of problems reported at the home and because shots had been heard by dispatchers over the phone. 

Officer Michael Crawshaw was 32 years of age.  He was a three year member of the force.

Last day of watch: December 6, 2009.

May he rest in peace.  Deepest sympathy to his family and the Penn Hills Police Department.

Connecticut Officers Rally

Hartford police officers, joined by colleagues from Bristol, Manchester and the state police, rallied in front of Hartford Superior Court where the man accused of shooting Officer Michael Bodner was making his second appearance.  Officer Michael Bodner was shot twice by Dwayne Powell on November 11, 2009.  Officer Bodner and his partner, Officer Karen Spearman stopped Powell as they investigated a series of burglaries.  Powell ran from the officers, struggled when caught, and then pulled a .380-caliber handgun and shot Officer Bodner twice.

State police union president, Steve Rief, stated "An assault on a police officer is an assault against the foundation of the nation's civil society.  There has to be a strong stand taken."
